Winter School «Global Citizenship education im Zeichen globaler Krisen»
WUNU students majoring in Business Communications and Translation took part in the Winter School "Global Citizenship education in the Zeichen globaler Krisen". During the school's run, young people and scholars from Germany and Ukraine exchanged views on current global issues.
Under the guidance of professors of the Institute of General Education and Vocational Education (IAEB) of the Technical University of Dortmund in cooperation with Professor Olga Tsaryk and Dr. Natalia Yashchyk from Ternopil, students from Ukraine and Germany discussed different approaches to global citizenship education (GCE). For example, how working with global structures and challenges can serve as an individual cosmopolitan education and become a starting point for social and political commitments. During the event, the speakers focused on current global issues: war and conflict in Ukraine, the climate crisis, migration and refugees, poverty, post- and neocolonialism.
The TU Dortmund Winter School offered a large number of keynote reports presenting the basics of the GCE concept, the cultural and political context of cosmopolitan education and learning, and its importance in times of war and crisis. The lectures were accompanied by four thematic working and discussion blocks. The main focus was on the UNESCO GCE concepts and the global sustainable development goals. Other discussion groups were devoted to a range of issues related to education, multilingualism and foreign language learning, post- and decolonial concepts of global citizenship education.
While visiting the Leibniz International Gymnasium in Dortmund, the students also had the opportunity to participate in classes and reflect on what they had learned.
