A special humanity lesson held at WUNU
A special lesson on humanity was held at the West Ukrainian National University. The event was hosted by Volodymyr Symanyshyn, a soldier, hero and example of resilience, and Olena Khmelnytska, a volunteer, public figure and displaced person from Rubizhne. They shared their stories, experiences and the painful realities of war.
“Before the war, I lived an ordinary life, working abroad. When I learned about the invasion, I did not hesitate to return to Ukraine, even though I had no military training. I fought in many sectors: in Bakhmut, Chasovyi Yar, where I was wounded. Now I use Ukrainian prostheses and am learning to live in a new way,” Volodymyr said.
After being wounded, he felt the urge to paint: “To be honest, I didn't even think I would ever start painting again. But it helped me recover. I hope that soon I will be able to present my exhibition at your university. I met Ms. Olena at art therapy, and it was she who helped me to discover this talent,” the soldier said.
"This meeting is for those who have decided to stay in Ukraine, who will help it rise from the ashes. It is important to talk about how to help our defenders and the wounded, how not to turn away from those who have sacrificed their health for us,” emphasized Olena Khmelnytska.
During the lesson, the students, together with Olena and Volodymyr, discussed the challenges that the war poses for society and learned about the importance of supporting the military and people who have survived severe injuries and amputations. Another important topic covered the attitude toward soldiers in everyday life: the participants shared their thoughts on the unacceptability of disrespect or indifference to those who defend Ukraine.
"The enemy needs not only Donetsk and Luhansk regions, they want the whole of Ukraine. And if we are indifferent, they will take it by any means,” the volunteer emphasized.
The meeting was not just a lecture, but a sincere conversation, a reminder that the war is still raging, changing our country terribly.
The future of Ukraine depends on each of us!
